Linda Farley Wade has been a quilter for about 25 years. She used to make her quilts completely by hand but now uses one of her many antique treadle sewing machines.
Linda gives lectures and demonstrations on antique sewing machines. She encourages young people to learn how to quilt. She contributes quilt squares to the "Home of the Brave" project.
One of Linda's most rewarding experiences is making "memory quilts". She uses the lost loved one's clothes to fashion a quilt, adding a photo, and an embroidered label. Linda can also make a quilt with new fabric and add anything that might make it special for them - a favorite tie, a scarf, or a professional symbol representing something in their lives. People can use a permanent pen to write messages on the plain squares. Some quilts are made with pockets so people can write down memories on paper to put in the pockets. Sometimes Linda uses specialty fabric for the back of the quilt based on the interest of the person being honored.
Linda likes to sit and talk with the person having the quilt made because it helps her understand the likes and dislikes, hobbies, interest, and basic personality of the honoree. She strives to make each quilt an original work of art and a special form of comfort for the person having the quilt made. (less)... Read more
